Subwoofers either fire forward, out of the front of the cabinet, or downward, into the floor. People often wonder whether one sounds better. In practice the difference is smaller than you’d think, but there are a few practical considerations that may tip your choice.
At subwoofer frequencies, sound spreads in all directions regardless of which way the driver faces, so neither design is inherently better. Front-firing subs are a little easier to place and less prone to rattling the floor; down-firing subs can be more compact and hide the driver. Choose on size, placement and floor type.
Why direction matters less than you’d expect
Bass wavelengths are many feet long, far larger than the sub cabinet. At those frequencies a sub radiates almost equally in every direction (it’s “omnidirectional”), so the driver’s orientation barely changes what reaches your ears. Placement in the room matters far more. See subwoofer placement.
Front-firing: pros and cons
- Easier to place close to walls and furniture.
- Less direct energy into the floor, which can mean fewer rattles on suspended floors and in apartments.
- The driver is visible (unless covered by a grille), and pets or kids can poke it.
Examples: SVS SB-1000 Pro, Klipsch R-101SW.
Down-firing: pros and cons
- The driver is hidden and protected.
- Cabinets can be compact and furniture-like.
- Needs a solid, flat floor and enough clearance under the cabinet; thick carpet can get too close to the driver.
- Can transmit more vibration into wooden floors.
Examples: Klipsch R-80SWi, REL T/7x (its passive radiator fires down).
Which should you choose?
| Situation | Lean towards |
|---|---|
| Apartment or wooden floor | Front-firing |
| Thick carpet | Front-firing, or down-firing with spikes |
| Kids and pets | Down-firing, or front-firing with a sturdy grille |
| Tight space beside furniture | Either; prioritise cabinet size |
