How We Research and Recommend Subwoofers

This page explains how we choose the subwoofers we recommend and how we keep the site accurate. If something here doesn’t match what you see on a product page, tell us.

In short

We base recommendations on published specifications, independent measurements, long-term owner feedback and practical setup knowledge. We don’t accept payment for placement, we list downsides for every product, and we re-check availability whenever a guide is updated.

What we look at

1. The specs that matter (and the ones that don’t)

We focus on continuous (RMS) amplifier power rather than peak watts, the low-frequency limit a manufacturer quotes and how it’s measured (a figure at −3 dB means much more than one without a tolerance), driver size, cabinet type and size, and the inputs and controls. Peak wattage figures and “max power” numbers on cheap products are mostly marketing, so we don’t rank on them.

2. Independent measurements

Where a subwoofer has been measured by an independent source, such as Data-Bass or the measurement-led reviews published by Audioholics, we use that data to compare real output and distortion rather than relying on marketing. Not every product has been measured this way, and when it hasn’t, we say so rather than guess.

3. Long-term owner feedback

Reviews written in the first week tell you about unboxing. We’re more interested in what owners report after months: amplifier failures, hum issues, auto-standby annoyances, app problems, and how a sub copes in different rooms. Recurring problems count heavily against a product.

4. How it fits a real room

Most bass problems are room problems. We weigh things like cabinet size, front-firing versus down-firing drivers, room-correction features and connection options because they decide whether a sub will actually sound good where you put it.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t publish star ratings or scores copied from retailers.
  • We don’t quote prices, because they change daily. Buttons link to the live listing.
  • We don’t claim to have personally tested products we haven’t.
  • We don’t accept payment from brands to include or rank products.

Keeping guides up to date

Guides are reviewed periodically. When we update a page we re-check that each recommended model is still sold, swap out discontinued products, and fix anything that’s changed, such as a new model generation. The date at the top of each article shows when it was last updated.
