Two 12-inch subs is the classic car setup, and the amp is where most people go wrong. The right choice depends on the subs’ total RMS power and how their voice coils can be wired, which usually means a final load of 1 Ω, 2 Ω or 4 Ω. Below are the amps we’d pair with the most common combinations, including the two 12s we’ve reviewed.
The short version
- Two dual 4 Ω subs wire to 1 Ω (or 4 Ω). Two dual 2 Ω subs wire to 2 Ω.
- Two 500 W subs: a 1,000 W at 1 Ω amp like the Rockford P1000X1bd.
- Two 600 W subs: 1,200 W at 1 Ω, like the Kicker CXA1200.1 or Rockford R2-1200X1.
- Two dual 2 Ω subs: the Kicker CXA1200.1, which makes 1,200 W at 2 Ω too.

- Efficient
- Bought direct from Rockford
- Only 300 W if you wire to 4 Ω
Rockford Fosgate Prime R2-1200X1
Two dual 4 Ω subs at 1 Ω, such as a pair of P3D4-12s.
- 1,200 W at 1 Ω
- 800 W at 2 Ω

Skar Audio RP-1200.1D
Two subs at 1 Ω on a tighter budget.
- 1,200 W RMS at 1 Ω (Skar)

- 1 Ω rating only listed
Taramps Smart 3 Bass
Two competition-style subs at 1,000–1,500 W each.
- 3,000 W RMS from 0.5 to 2 Ω
- 200 A fuse
- 4 to 1/0 AWG input
Taramps rates the Smart 3 for the same 3,000 W from 0.5 to 2 Ω, which makes it easy to match two high-power DVC subs.
- Same power across loads
- Huge headroom
- Needs 1/0 wire and electrical upgrades
Wiring two dual-voice-coil subs
- Two DVC4 → 1 Ω: wire each sub’s coils in parallel (2 Ω each), then the two subs in parallel.
- Two DVC4 → 4 Ω: wire each sub’s coils in series (8 Ω each), then the two subs in parallel. Most amps make far less power here.
- Two DVC2 → 2 Ω: each sub in series (4 Ω each), then the subs in parallel.
- Two DVC2 → 0.5 Ω: everything in parallel. Only for amps rated at 0.5 Ω.
Use the same wiring on both subs so they get equal power.
Power, wiring and box
- Wire: 1,000–1,200 W needs 4 AWG copper on a typical 17-foot run; 2,000 W and up needs 1/0. See our wiring kit guide and calculator.
- Box: two subs need twice the volume. Our box designer sizes sealed or ported dual-sub boxes.
- Rattles: two 12s will find every loose panel; our rattle fix guide helps.
Safety first: disconnect the battery’s negative terminal before you start, fuse the power wire within 18 inches of the battery, and use a professional installer if you’re not comfortable working on your car’s electrics.
FAQs
Is 1 Ω or 4 Ω better for two subs?
1 Ω gets the most power from most monoblocks. 4 Ω is gentler on the amp but much less powerful, so it only makes sense with an amp rated strongly at 4 Ω.
Can I use two different subs on one amp?
It’s best not to. Different subs have different impedance and efficiency, so one will be louder and one may be overpowered.
Should the amp exceed the subs’ RMS?
Slightly more is fine if you set the gain carefully; clipping, not power, causes most damage. See our amp sizing guide.
Do I need a second battery?
Not usually at 1,000–1,200 W. Above about 2,000 W, upgrade your charging wiring and consider an AGM battery.
