A DJ subwoofer is a different animal from a home sub. It has to fill a room full of people, survive being loaded in and out of cars, and play loud for hours without the amplifier overheating. Here are the powered PA subs worth considering in 2026, from portable 12-inch units to full 18-inch boxes.
- Best overall: QSC KS118
- App control: JBL EON718S
- Best value: EV ELX200-18SP
- Budget: Mackie Thump18Sv4
- Portable: QSC KS112
What a DJ sub needs
- Output and headroom. Look at continuous power and manufacturer max SPL, and treat peak watts with caution.
- Built-in DSP and limiting to protect the driver at high levels.
- XLR inputs and outputs with a high-pass output to your tops.
- Portability: weight, handles and wheels. An 18-inch sub can weigh 80+ lb.

How many subs do you need?
| Venue / crowd | Typical setup |
|---|---|
| House party, up to ~50 people | One 12–15-inch sub + two tops |
| Bar, small club, 50–150 people | One or two 18-inch subs |
| Weddings and events, 150–300 | Two 18-inch subs, possibly cardioid |
| Larger | Multiple 18s; consider a professional rental |
Setup tips
- Run the mixer into the sub, then use the sub’s high-pass output to feed your tops so they don’t waste power on deep bass.
- Place subs together on the floor near a wall for maximum output (coupling), not split far apart.
- Don’t clip the mixer: keep the master meter out of the red. See clipping explained.
- Respect hearing and noise limits. Venues often have SPL restrictions.
