The Tacoma is one of the hardest trucks to add bass to, because there’s no trunk and very little space behind the seats. The fix is a vehicle-specific enclosure shaped to sit behind the rear seat of the 4-door cab, or a compact powered sub that slides under a seat. Below are the options that actually fit, sorted by generation, with the amp and wiring each one needs.
The short version
- Best overall (2005–2023 4-door): Kicker 51KTDL7T102, dual L7T 10s behind the rear seat.
- Best single sub (2016–2023 Double Cab): Skar Audio loaded VS-10 D2 enclosure.
- Best with an MB Quart system (2016–2023): MB Quart dual 10 sealed upgrade.
- Any generation, no amp needed: an under-seat powered sub like the Kicker Hideaway HS10 or JBL BassPro SL2.
- 2024 and newer: vehicle-specific choices are still limited; measure for an under-seat powered sub.

Our picks
Kicker 51KTDL7T102 Tacoma L7T enclosure
For 2005–2023 Tacoma 4-door cabs that want real output.
- Dual 10″ L7T square subs
- 2 Ω single terminal
- 500–1,000 W RMS recommended
- 25–100 Hz, front-firing
Kicker shapes this MDF enclosure to the contours behind the Tacoma’s rear seat and loads it with two Solo-Baric L7T square 10s, which Kicker says offer more cone area than round subs of the same size. Kicker notes that rear trim, inverters, storage compartments or tool kits may need removing. Pair it with a mono amp making 500–1,000 W at 2 Ω, such as the Kicker CXA1200.1 with its gain set carefully. Audiosavings also lists it on Amazon as a bundle with a third-party mono amp and a 4-gauge wiring kit.
- Most output of the behind-seat options
- Vehicle-specific fit
- Covers two generations
- Needs a strong amp and 4 AWG wiring
- Some rear trim or storage may need removing
- Stock on Amazon is limited
Skar Audio loaded VS-10 D2 Tacoma enclosure
For 2016–2023 Double Cab owners who want a lighter, simpler install.
- 1 × Skar VS-10 D2 10″ sub
- Pre-wired to 1 Ω
- Fiberglass enclosure
- 1,000 W max (Skar)
A single 10 in a molded fiberglass shell that fits behind the rear seat. It’s pre-wired to 1 Ω, so choose a mono amp that is stable at 1 Ω and sized to the VS-10’s RMS rating rather than the 1,000 W max figure. Our amp sizing guide shows how.
- Lightweight fiberglass
- Sold by Skar Audio
- Simple single-sub install
- Needs a 1 Ω-stable amp
- Less output than a dual 10
MB Quart dual 10 Tacoma subwoofer upgrade
For 2016–2023 Tacomas, especially with MB Quart’s Stage 6 system.
- 2 × 10″ subs, sealed
- 600 W power handling
- HDPE composite enclosure
MB Quart designed this to pair with its Tacoma Stage 6 system, though the listing says a compatible aftermarket amplifier also works. The listing highlights the strength of its HDPE composite enclosure, a change from the usual carpeted MDF.
- Durable composite shell
- Sealed, tight bass
- Fits behind the rear seat
- Designed around MB Quart’s own amp
- Professional install recommended
Kicker Hideaway HS10
For any Tacoma generation, if it fits under a seat.
- Powered 10″ with built-in amp
- Retailers list 180 W RMS
- Remote level, phase, +6 dB boost
- Speaker-level or DC-offset turn-on
An all-in-one sub with its own amplifier, so you only need power, ground and a signal. Measure the space under your seat first; the Hideaway is compact but not tiny. Our under-seat powered sub guide has more options, including the JBL BassPro SL2.
- No separate amp needed
- Works with the factory radio
- Fits many cabs
- Far less output than the L7T dual 10
- Under-seat fit varies by trim
Build-your-own option
Skar also sells an empty sealed 10-inch box for 2016–2023 Double Cabs. It’s only 0.60 cu ft, with a 9.35-inch cutout and 3.75 inches of mounting depth, so it needs a shallow 10 designed for a small sealed box. Check your sub’s depth and recommended volume before you buy.
Wiring a Tacoma sub
- Signal: the factory radio has no subwoofer RCA outputs, so use an amp with speaker-level inputs, like the Kicker CXA series, or a line output converter. Our line output converter guide covers both.
- Power wire: for 500–1,000 W, use 4 AWG copper. Our wiring kit picks and wire gauge calculator help.
- Amp location: under the rear seat or on the back wall of the cab, with airflow.
- Ground: a short, clean connection to bare chassis metal near the amp.
Our step-by-step amp install guide walks through the whole job, and adding a sub to a factory stereo covers the signal side.
Safety first: disconnect the battery’s negative terminal before you start, fuse the power wire within 18 inches of the battery, and use a professional installer if you’re not comfortable working on your car’s electrics.
FAQs
Will a sub fit in a Tacoma Access Cab?
Kicker lists its L7T box for 4-door cabs, and the Skar and MB Quart boxes for the Double Cab. For other cabs, measure carefully and consider an under-seat powered sub.
Do I lose rear-seat space?
Behind-seat boxes sit between the seat back and the cab wall. You keep legroom, but you may lose storage cubbies or tool storage.
Is a dual 10 too much for a truck cab?
No. Truck cabs are small, so two 10s get loud quickly. Set the gain carefully and use a subsonic filter.
What about the 2024+ Tacoma?
The redesigned cab has fewer vehicle-specific boxes so far. We’ll update this guide as more appear.
