Best AGM Batteries for Car Audio (Starting and Second Battery)

Big amplifiers lean hard on the battery. When the alternator can’t keep up on a long bass note, the battery fills the gap, and a standard flooded battery doesn’t enjoy repeated deep, heavy draws. AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries are sealed, spill-proof, tolerant of vibration and better at delivering large currents, which is why they’re the usual choice for car audio. Here are the AGM batteries we’d consider, as a starting battery replacement or as a second battery near the amp.

The short version

  • Best starting-battery upgrade: Optima YellowTop D34/78, a dual-purpose AGM with 55 Ah and 750 CCA.
  • Best for big systems: XS Power D3400, 65 Ah, mounts in almost any position.
  • Best second battery: Kinetik HC2400, a sealed AGM power cell sold for audio use.
  • Do the Big 3 first. A better battery helps most when the cables can carry the current.
  • A battery isn’t an alternator. If your system draws more than the alternator makes on average, you still need more charging.

Our picks

Best starting-battery upgrade

Optima YellowTop D34/78

For replacing the main battery in most cars and trucks with a group 34 or 78 tray.

  • 55 Ah (C20)
  • 750 CCA
  • 120-minute reserve capacity
  • Dual SAE and GM side terminals
  • 43.5 lb

Optima sells the YellowTop as a dual-purpose battery, for starting the engine and for deep-cycle use, which suits a system that plays with the engine off. The dual terminals fit both top-post and side-post cars.

Strengths

  • Dual-purpose design
  • Fits many vehicles
  • Sold by Amazon
Weaknesses

  • Less capacity than the XS Power D3400
  • Check your tray size before ordering
Best for big systems

XS Power D3400

For systems above about 1,500 W, as a main or second battery.

  • 65 Ah
  • 1,000 CA
  • AGM, sealed and valve regulated
  • Mounts in almost any position

XS Power is a car-audio battery specialist. The D3400 has more capacity than the YellowTop, and XS Power lists ultra-low internal resistance, which helps it deliver large currents on bass notes.

Strengths

  • High capacity for its size
  • Very low internal resistance
  • Sold by Amazon
Weaknesses

  • Check terminal type and fit
  • Heavier than smaller cells
Best second battery

Kinetik HC2400

For a dedicated audio battery in the trunk near the amp.

  • AGM, sealed and non-spillable
  • Mounts in any position
  • Sold as a 2,400 W power cell

Kinetik sells its HC power cells for car audio, typically as a supplemental battery. Mounting near the amp keeps the high-current cable short.

Strengths

  • Built for audio use
  • Mount in any position
  • Low ESR
Weaknesses

  • Not intended as a starting battery
  • Limited published specs on the listing

How much battery do you need?

System RMSTypical approach
Under 1,000 WStock battery is usually fine if healthy; check wiring first
1,000–1,500 WAGM starting battery plus the Big 3
1,500–3,000 WAGM main battery, Big 3, consider a second AGM near the amp
3,000 W and upHigh-output alternator plus one or more audio batteries

Adding a second battery

  1. Mount it securely near the amp, in a sealed AGM so there’s no venting into the cabin.
  2. Run cable between the batteries as thick as your amp’s power wire or thicker, fused within 18 inches of each battery.
  3. Ground it to the chassis with the same gauge cable.
  4. Add an isolator or relay if you want the starting battery protected from being drained when the engine is off.
  5. Charge both batteries fully before use.

Safety first: disconnect the battery’s negative terminal before you start, fuse the power wire within 18 inches of the battery, and use a professional installer if you’re not comfortable working on your car’s electrics.

A second battery is often confused with a capacitor; our capacitor vs battery guide explains why the battery stores far more energy.

FAQs

Can I mix an AGM and a flooded battery?

It’s best to keep the same type, or isolate them, because they have different charging needs.

Do AGM batteries need a special charger?

Most cars charge AGMs fine. For a separate charger, choose one with an AGM mode. Optima recommends 14.4 V charging for the YellowTop.

Is a red or yellow Optima better for audio?

RedTop is a starting battery. YellowTop is sold as dual-purpose (starting and deep cycle), so it suits audio better.

Will a bigger battery hurt my alternator?

No, but a deeply drained battery makes the alternator work hard to recharge it.
