The Punch P3 is Rockford Fosgate’s best-performing Punch subwoofer and has been a staple of car audio builds for years. The 12-inch dual 4-ohm P3D4-12 handles 600 watts RMS and has a long 15.9 mm Xmax. Here’s what the published specs tell you and how to build around it.
Rockford Fosgate Punch P3D4-12
A proven, hard-hitting 12-inch sub for ported boxes and serious daily systems. It wants a bit more space and power than mid-range rivals, and rewards both.
- 12-inch, dual 4-ohm voice coils
- 600 W RMS / 1,200 W max
- 15.9 mm Xmax
- 6.66-inch mounting depth
- Sealed 1.02 cu ft; vented 1.79 cu ft
If you want plenty of output from a single 12 and have room for a ported box, the P3 is a long-proven choice. If mounting depth is tight, the Kicker CompR or a shallow-mount sub fits more easily.
- 600 W RMS handling and 15.9 mm Xmax
- Anodized aluminum cone and StampCast basket
- Rockford publishes full T/S parameters
- Sold by Rockford Fosgate itself on Amazon
- 6.66-inch mounting depth rules out some installs
- 85 dB sensitivity needs a capable amp
- Wants a bigger box than shallow 12s

How it performs
Ported
With an Fs of 27.7 Hz and a Qts of 0.52, the P3 is built for a vented box. Rockford’s recommended 1.79 cubic feet (before port and driver displacement) gives strong output for rap and EDM. Our sub box designer calculates the port for your chosen tuning.
Sealed
A 1.02 cubic foot sealed box keeps the install small and gives tighter, more accurate bass, at the cost of some low-end output. It’s a good choice for mixed music and for cars where every inch of trunk counts.
Setup tips
- Wire the coils for your amp. Parallel gives 2 ohms (most mono amps make the most power there); series gives 8 ohms.
- Pick an amp around 600 W RMS at your final load, or about 1,200 W for a pair.
- Size your power wire. Our amp wire and fuse calculator shows what 600 W or more needs.
- Stop rattles early. A hard-hitting sub will find every loose panel; see our rattle fix guide.
How it compares
| Rockford P3D4-12 | Kicker CompR 12 | |
|---|---|---|
| RMS power | 600 W | 500 W |
| Impedance | Dual 4 ohm | Dual 4 ohm |
| Sensitivity | 85 dB | 86.9 dB |

The Kicker CompR 12 is shallower and a little more efficient, which suits tighter installs and smaller amps. For more choices, see our best car subwoofers and, for tight trucks, our shallow-mount 12-inch picks.
Who should buy it
- Builders with room for a ported box.
- Daily systems that want serious output from one or two 12s.
- DIYers who want published T/S parameters for box design.
- Owners pairing it with a 600 W-class mono amp.
Who should look elsewhere
- If your space is shallow, choose a shallow-mount sub.
- If you want a no-box solution, see our underseat powered subs.
- If you only have a small amp, a more efficient sub gives more bass per watt.
FAQs
What size box for the P3D4-12?
Rockford recommends 1.02 cu ft sealed or 1.79 cu ft vented. Our box designer handles port size and displacement.
P3D2-12 or P3D4-12?
They’re the same sub with different coils. Dual 2-ohm wires to 1 or 4 ohms; dual 4-ohm wires to 2 or 8 ohms. Pick the one that gives your amp its best load.
Is the P3 good for daily driving?
Yes. It’s a long-running daily-driver favorite; the main limits are mounting depth and the power it needs.
Can it run in a small sealed box?
Yes. Rockford’s 1.02 cu ft sealed recommendation keeps it compact, with tighter but less deep bass than vented.
