Many modern factory stereos don’t send a clean, full-range signal to the speakers. They split it into tweeter, midrange and sub channels, add time delays, and change the EQ as the volume rises. A basic line output converter passes all of that straight to your aftermarket amp. A digital signal processor (DSP) can sum the channels back together, undo the factory EQ and let you tune the new system properly. Here are the DSPs we’d look at.
The short version
- Best for Ford and Chrysler: Rockford Fosgate DSR1, which takes the factory signal through an integrated iDatalink Maestro module.
- Most flexible processor: AudioControl DM-810, 8 inputs and 10 outputs with a PC tuning app.
- DSP and amp in one: AudioControl D-6.1200, a 6-channel amp with 8 speaker-level inputs.
- Easiest smart LOC: Kicker KEYLOC, which identifies what each factory speaker wire carries.
- Sub only on a simple system? A line output converter may be enough.
Our picks
Rockford Fosgate DSR1
For replacing the factory amp and speakers in supported Ford and Chrysler vehicles.
- 8 channels
- Integrated iDatalink Maestro module
- 245 bands of EQ
- iOS and Android tuning app
Rockford describes the DSR1 as a solution for replacing the factory amplifier in Ford and Chrysler vehicles: once flashed with vehicle firmware, it uses the factory source unit’s full-range signal and its CANbus messages. Tuning is done from a phone app.
- Uses a flat factory signal in supported vehicles
- Phone-app tuning
- Pairs with Rockford’s vehicle kits
- Vehicle support is limited; check Maestro fitment
- Needs a Maestro harness for your car
AudioControl DM-810
For complex factory systems and multi-amp builds.
- 8 inputs, 10 outputs
- 4 speaker-level input pairs, 4 RCA input pairs
- S/PDIF and TOSLINK digital inputs
- PC tuning app, AccuBASS, 30-band EQ
The DM-810 can take many factory channels at once, sum them, and route them to up to ten outputs. AccuBASS counters the bass roll-off many factory radios apply as the volume rises.
- Huge input flexibility
- Digital inputs
- AccuBASS
- Needs a laptop to tune
- More than a sub-only install needs
AudioControl D-6.1200
For a full system in a tight space.
- 6-channel Class D amp, 1,200 W total
- 8 speaker-level inputs, 6 RCA inputs
- Configurable as 3, 4, 5 or 6 channels
- Input and output RTAs
Combining the DSP and amplifier saves space and wiring. It suits a front-speaker and sub upgrade where you want one box to do everything.
- One box replaces DSP and amp
- Flexible channel setup
- AccuBASS
- Less power for subs than a dedicated mono amp
- Limited stock on Amazon
Kicker KEYLOC
For a simpler factory-integration job.
- Auto-detects Hi, Mid or Lo on each speaker wire
- Keep or defeat factory time delay and all-pass filters
- Powered line output converter
Attach the factory speaker wires, play a test tone and the KEYLOC’s lights show which frequency range each pair carries, without an oscilloscope or RTA. It can also undo factory time delay.
- Simplifies finding the right wires
- Undoes factory delay
- Small
- Not a full tuning DSP
- Low stock on Amazon
Do you need a DSP or just a converter?
| Your car | Choose |
|---|---|
| Basic factory radio, sub only | Line output converter; see our LOC guide |
| Factory bass fades as volume rises | AudioControl EPICENTER Micro or a DSP with AccuBASS |
| Factory system splits signals into tweeter/mid/sub channels | A summing LOC like the AudioControl LC7i, or a DSP |
| Premium factory system (Bose, JBL, Harman Kardon) | DSP; see our premium factory audio guide |
| Full speaker and amp replacement | DSP or DSP amp |
Setting one up
- Identify what each factory speaker wire carries (a KEYLOC or test tones help).
- Connect the factory channels to the DSP’s speaker-level inputs and sum them into full-range left and right.
- Turn off or undo factory time delay and EQ if the DSP can.
- Set crossovers, then time alignment, then EQ, in that order.
- Set amp gains last, using our multimeter gain guide.
Safety first: disconnect the battery’s negative terminal before you start, fuse the power wire within 18 inches of the battery, and use a professional installer if you’re not comfortable working on your car’s electrics.
FAQs
Can a DSP fix a factory sub that sounds weak?
Often yes, by restoring bass the factory EQ removes. But a better sub and amp usually make a bigger difference.
Do I need a laptop?
For most matrix DSPs, yes. The Rockford DSR1 uses a phone app instead.
Will I keep steering-wheel controls?
Usually, because the factory radio stays. Check fitment for integrated modules like the DSR1.
Is a DSP worth it for a sub only?
Only if your factory signal is heavily processed. Otherwise a good line output converter is enough.
