KEF Kube 8 MIE Review (2026): Small Sealed Sub, Smart DSP

The KEF Kube 8 MIE is the smallest model in KEF’s Kube MIE range, a tidy sealed cube designed for bookshelf speakers, desktop setups and small living rooms. It borrows DSP from KEF’s LS60 Wireless speakers to get more controlled bass from an 8-inch driver. Here’s what it does well, where it runs out of steam and who should buy one.

Our verdict

KEF Kube 8 MIE

A tidy 11.5-inch cube that adds clean, tuneful bass to bookshelf speakers, desktop systems and small living rooms. KEF’s DSP keeps it composed, and the placement EQ makes setup easy. It’s a small sub for small rooms, not a home theater powerhouse.

  • 8-inch front-firing long-throw driver
  • 300 W RMS Class D
  • Sealed cabinet
  • 34–140 Hz (−6 dB, KEF spec)
  • Line and speaker-level inputs; 3-position placement EQ

For a small room or a compact stereo system, it’s a neat, well-made way to add bass without a big box. For medium or large rooms, or serious home theater, step up to a 10- or 12-inch sub.

Strengths

  • Very compact: about 11.5 inches on each side
  • Sealed design and DSP for tight, controlled bass
  • Placement EQ for free-standing, wall or cabinet, and corner
  • Speaker-level inputs and SmartConnect make it easy to add to any system
Weaknesses

  • Limited depth and output for medium or large rooms
  • No app or parametric EQ
  • Wireless needs the optional KW1 kit

KEF launched the Kube MIE range in February 2024, starting with the 8, with 10-, 12- and 15-inch models above it. “MIE” is KEF’s Music Integrity Engine, DSP first developed for its LS60 Wireless speakers. In the Kube, its main job is iBX, which analyzes the signal and adjusts the bass so the small driver can play louder without running out of control.

How it sounds

Music

Music is where a small sealed sub like this makes the most sense. Sealed cabinets roll off gently and stop quickly, which suits bass guitar and kick drum, and an 8-inch driver is light and fast. Paired with bookshelf speakers or a desktop system, the Kube 8 MIE should fill in the bottom octave they’re missing without drawing attention to itself. Independent measurements of this model are scarce, so we’re relying on KEF’s specifications and the established behavior of compact sealed designs here.

Movies and games

In a small room, the Kube 8 MIE will add welcome weight to TV, films and games. KEF rates it to 34 Hz at −6 dB and 105 dB maximum output, which is fine for an apartment or bedroom but won’t produce the deep, physical rumble of a large 12-inch sub. If movies are the priority and you have the space, a bigger sub such as the SVS PB-1000 Pro is a better fit.

Setup tips

  • Set the placement EQ first. Choose free-standing, wall/cabinet or corner to match where it sits. The corner setting cuts the bass boost a corner adds, so the sub doesn’t sound boomy.
  • Use speaker-level inputs with powered speakers or amps without a sub output. SmartConnect detects mono or stereo signals and sets the gain for you.
  • Set the low-pass to suit your speakers. With small bookshelf speakers, start around 80 to 100 Hz; our crossover finder gives the exact number. With an AV receiver, use the LFE setting and let the receiver handle the crossover.
  • Keep it near the front. Small subs often play up to 100 Hz or more, where you can start to hear where the sub is. Placing it near the speakers keeps the bass anchored to the front.

If you need the smallest, simplest add-on for powered speakers, the Kanto SUB8 is a cheaper alternative. If you can fit a bigger box, the SVS SB-1000 Pro delivers a lot more output and app control. KEF’s own Kube 10 MIE is the step up if you want the same features with a 10-inch driver. See all our 8-inch picks.

FAQs

Is an 8-inch sub big enough?

For rooms up to about 200 square feet, or for music at moderate levels, yes. In bigger rooms or for loud movie bass, step up to a 10- or 12-inch sub. Our size quiz recommends a size for your room.

Does the Kube 8 MIE work with a soundbar?

Only if the soundbar has a subwoofer output. Most soundbars only pair with their own brand’s wireless sub.

Can I make it wireless?

Yes, with KEF’s optional KW1 wireless adapter kit, which plugs into the expansion port.

Kube 8 MIE or Kube 10 MIE?

The 10 has a larger driver for more depth and output in a slightly bigger cabinet. If your room is more than about 200 square feet, the 10 is the safer choice.
