JBL has replaced its biggest party speaker. The PartyBox Ultimate 2 went on sale on 4 October 2026 for $1,799. It has two 10-inch woofers, a 1,500-watt rating and a much longer feature list than the original. We look at what’s new, what the bass hardware tells us, and whether it can replace a subwoofer at a party.
- $1,799, sold through JBL.com and Best Buy from launch, with more retailers in 2027.
- Dual 10-inch woofers with dual bass ports, dual 5-inch mids and two horn-loaded tweeters.
- JBL rates it at 1,500 W, which it says is more than 36% up on the previous generation.
- Wi-Fi 6, AirPlay, Chromecast, Spotify Connect, Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast, plus optical, XLR and USB-C inputs.
- IPX4 splashproof, with a touchscreen volume dial, larger wheels, a new lightshow and AI vocal removal for karaoke.

The acoustic layout now has a proper three-way design: two horn-loaded tweeters, which JBL says come from its pro range, two dedicated 5-inch midrange drivers, and the two 10-inch woofers. JBL also adds “AI Sound Boost”, processing that it says analyses the music in real time to keep distortion low at high volume. In practice, that’s a smarter limiter, which is exactly what a speaker like this needs.
The rest of the upgrades are about running a party: a volume dial that doubles as a touchscreen showing the track and light mode, built-in vocal removal for karaoke, party games, a redesigned lightshow that projects onto the floor, and bigger wheels. The optical input lets it take TV sound for karaoke nights, and the XLR line-in accepts a DJ mixer.
What the bass hardware tells us
Two ported 10-inch woofers is serious hardware for a speaker you can wheel around. Together they have more cone area than a single 12-inch home subwoofer. JBL doesn’t publish a low-frequency extension figure, though, and the 1,500 W rating is a headline number with no stated measurement standard, so don’t compare it directly with a home subwoofer’s RMS rating.
One thing worth knowing if you’re planning outdoor parties: bass drops off outdoors. Indoors, walls and the floor reinforce low frequencies; outside there’s nothing to reflect them, so a speaker that shakes the living room will sound noticeably lighter in a garden. Placing it against a wall or a fence, rather than in the open, helps.
JBL’s release doesn’t mention a battery, and the original Ultimate ran on mains power, so plan on having an outlet nearby. If portability on battery is a must, look at JBL’s smaller battery-powered PartyBox models instead.
Should you wait or buy the original?
The original JBL PartyBox Ultimate is still on sale at Amazon, and it’s likely to be discounted now that its replacement is out. If you mainly want big, clean bass and lights for occasional parties, the original remains a capable choice. The Ultimate 2 makes more sense if you want the touchscreen, karaoke tools, optical TV input or the newer streaming options.
And if what you really want is deeper bass at home, a party speaker isn’t the most effective way to get it. A dedicated subwoofer placed well in the room will go lower and sound smoother for music and movies. Our powered subwoofers for DJs and subwoofers for music guides are the place to start.
Our take
On paper, the Ultimate 2 is a real step up: true three-way drivers, a proper XLR input and modern streaming make it more versatile than the party speakers it competes with. $1,799 is a lot, though, and the claims about power and AI processing need independent testing. We’d wait for reviews, and for the first price cut, before buying.
